AMD donates RM 112,500 to Penang Science Cluster to advance engineering pipeline for decades to come
Penang — September 8, 2022 — AMD (NASDAQ: AMD) today celebrated 50 years of operations, business services and innovation in Malaysia. To commemorate five decades of technology and community partnerships in the region, AMD donated RM112,500 to the Penang Science Cluster to advance STEM education initiatives for Malaysia’s next generation of aspiring innovators.
“Our 50th anniversary in Malaysia marks an important milestone in our history as a founding member of Malaysia’s semiconductor ecosystem. It is also time to celebrate what’s next, as AMD Malaysia employees push the boundaries of what’s possible every day to advance the community where they live and work,” said Dato’ Devinder Kumar, executive vice president, chief financial officer, and treasurer of AMD. “AMD technology is helping solve the most important challenges we face in the world today, delivering new capabilities that advance Industry 4.0, scientific research, healthcare, communications and more. We are proud to contribute to Malaysia’s growth and support initiatives that help build a community of future engineers, knowledge workers and innovators for decades to come.”
The company’s RM112,500 donation will support Penang Science Cluster’s GameDev Program, a game development workshop and Game Jam competition aimed at equipping secondary students with coding and development skills to support Malaysia’s future pipeline of creative engineering and science talent. The program will provide the platform required for students to learn coding principles and nurture their innovation and creativity in building their own video games.
AMD has been an active part of the Malaysian community since 1972, when the company established its first assembly manufacturing facility in Penang. Since then, AMD Malaysia has grown to more than 800 employees spanning two Global Shared Services facilities in Penang and Cyberjaya that support AMD customers and suppliers worldwide.
In June 2022, AMD strategic partner and supplier TF-AMD Microelectronics Sdn. Bhd. announced a RM 2 billion capital investment through the construction of a new manufacturing facility in Penang, expected to create more than 3,000 new jobs in Malaysia. The strategic expansion builds on the significant investments AMD and TF-AMD have made in Malaysia over the past 50 years to support the company’s continued growth.
