Samsung Malaysia Electronics has been honored with two prestigious awards–the Waste Management Award-Malaysia and Carbon Disclosure Award-Malaysia–at the ESGBusiness Awards 2024, recognizing leadership in sustainability.

Samsung’s win reflects its dedication to reducing environmental impact, reaffirming its position as a leader in sustainable business.

“At Samsung, we are committed to driving positive change through sustainable practices, and we are pleased to be recognized for our efforts in waste management and carbon disclosure. These awards reflect our ongoing dedication to reducing our environmental impact while shaping a more sustainable future for generations to come,” says Teng Kah Wee, Head of Customer Satisfaction, Samsung Malaysia Electronics.

Receiving both Waste Management and Carbon Disclosure Awards underlines Samsung’s ongoing commitment to corporate sustainability and social responsibility.

Pioneering Waste Management Practices

The Waste Management Award highlights Samsung’s nationwide e-waste recycling programmes, including the installation of e-waste collection boxes at service centres across the nation. This allows customers to conveniently dispose used electronics like mobile phones, tablets, and accessories. By offering vouchers in return to those who drop off their e-waste, Samsung turns recycling into a rewarding experience.

In addition, Samsung further reduced the number of large home appliances such as refrigerators and washing machines through its trade-in programme, preventing unwanted home appliances from ending up in landfills. Annually, Samsung directs approximately 84,920 kg of e-waste to certified recycling vendors, ensuring compliance with environmental standards.

Sustainable Packaging

As part of the “Galaxy for the Planet” platform, Samsung has minimised waste generation by using recycled materials in the packaging. Seen in the Galaxy S22 and S23 Series which comes in sustainable packaging, this initiative not only reduces packaging weight but also encourages customers to reuse or repurpose materials, aligning with Samsung’s broader commitment to sustainability.

Reducing Carbon Footprints

Samsung Malaysia Electronics honored with the Carbon Disclosure Award, recognizing our commitment to sustainability. We have implemented a wide range of environmental initiatives at every stage of our value chain to reduce our environmental impact throughout the entire product life cycle—spanning from product development, sourcing, and manufacturing to distribution, usage, and disposal.

Through our Samsung Authorized Service Partners, we prioritize reducing electronic waste (e-waste) by replacing only the necessary parts during repairs. This approach allows customers to minimize e-waste by repairing, rather than replacing the entire product. By offering convenient and eco-friendly repair options, we not only extend the life of our products but also help reduce the carbon footprint associated with producing new devices and the disposal of e-waste.

Leading A Sustainable Future

Samsung’s Eco-Conscious Repair Program provides customers with affordable, sustainable repair options, significantly reducing e-waste. Between 2022 and 2024, the program saved an estimated 140,571 trees, with over 48,000 successful repairs of smartphones and televisions.

Both ESG awards received by Samsung underscore its commitment to driving meaningful change through sustainable business practices. Samsung will continue to innovate, creating a greener future for generations to come.
